A History of St Peter's

The original church dates back to the 11th century (1066?) with the building of the nave. The chancel was added in the 14th century; in it lie two ancient stone coffin lids each bearing an inscription in Norman French reading "Urien de St.Pierre, Lord of the Manor St Pierre, Died 1239" and "Cleric of the Church: Rector Benet."

The church was partly re windowed and refitted early in the 16th century and had a full Victorian restoration in 1873-75. In 2012 after 5 years of intensive fund raising, the roof was replaced and the outside drainage updated. Funds were raised through the Heritage Lottery, Monmouthshire Diocese, the generosity of local parishioners and visitors and outside charities.

The church is a Grade II listed building and hence repairs have to conform to the style of the original construction, using original materials whenever possible.
